That’s right, according to a new study by WordFinderX, our beloved sitcom created by Rob McElhenney is the hardest series to follow if you’re watching with subtitles, with a whopping 176.2 words per minute!
To put that in perspective, the National Disability Authority recommends that subtitles should be no more than 140 words per minute. So, if you’re like us and need to keep up with the gang’s quick-witted banter, you might want to ditch the subtitles altogether and just enjoy the show as it was meant to be!
But, if you’re a subtitle aficionado and want to test your reading speed, you should know that “Sunny” is followed closely by “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” at 174.6 wpm, and “Gilmore Girls” at 167.8 wpm. So, if you can keep up with these shows, you’re definitely a speed-reader!
The study by WordFinderX analyzed the subtitles from the most recently aired seasons of several TV series using OpenSubtitles, Subdl, and TVSubtitles.net. The wordiest genre was found to be comedy, which usually relies on quick verbal wordplay. In fact, across the 15 wordiest comedies, including “Modern Family” and “Parks and Recreation,” the average was 133.6 wpm.
Other notable findings from the study include the fact that “DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow” is the wordiest superhero show at 115.0 wpm, while animated series were led by Apple TV+’s “Central Park” with 163.9 wpm. And, if you’re a fan of other verbose animated shows, you’ll be happy to know that “South Park,” “Bob’s Burgers,” and “Bojack Horseman” also made the list.
It’s interesting to note that more and more people are using subtitles to watch TV, with four out of five 18-25-year-olds saying they turn on closed-captioning, even though only one in ten of these say they are deaf or hard of hearing. So, whether you’re a subtitle addict or a fast reader, one thing’s for sure: “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is not for the faint of heart!
